Whopper trade for a tattoo

Burger King Korea is marking its 40th anniversary with a unique twist – by inking its residents with scannable barcode tattoos that can be traded for rewards.
Launched to promote the newly upgraded Whopper, introduced in April 2024, the campaign saw the “Tattoo King” roam the streets of Haeundae, Busan, and Gangnam, Seoul during July and August.
The bobblehead mascot (reminiscent of Lord Farquar for any Shrek fans) was donning the signature Burger King crown and offering passers-by instant, temporary tattoos featuring one of 50 flame-inspired designs.
Created in collaboration with professional tattoo artists, the flame tattoos were embedded with reward barcodes resembling a grill motif. When scanned at Burger King kiosks, they could be redeemed for a free Whopper and soft drink.
The “Whopper Tattoo” campaign was met with enthusiastic participation, with around 8,000 people – including residents, tourists, and influencers – getting inked. Burger King’s sales boosted by 208% compared to the previous week and an impressive 92% of participants reported that the campaign effectively highlighted the new Whopper.
Promoted through Burger King Korea’s website, social channels and app, the campaign was an innovative approach to customer engagement.
